The Model Numbers

You will often hear people referring to a W124 or an R107 and perhaps wonder what it’s all about. Mercedes-Benz assign a development code to each model, consisting of a letter and three numbers. The most common letters are R for roadster and W for wagen (saloon), though they are not always consistently applied, even by the factory. There are others e.g. S for estate, V for stretched limo, C for coupe and A for cabriolet (a cabriolet is a four seat convertible, and the name dates back to the era of horse-drawn carriages – not many people know that). The numbers don’t have any meaning, being simply a referential numbering system. There are gaps, presumably for development models which never made it to production.
The above references are not really intended for public consumption, though enthusiasts use them to differentiate between the vast array of subtly different configurations which exist.
The designations intended for general public use are those inscribed on the bootlid badge of each car. Generally there is a three figure number which usually (though not always) represents the approximate engine size, followed by one or more letters which represents the model class and, if not a four-door saloon, the body style. Just to complicate things further, the letters were moved to the beginning in around 1993 and the body style letter was deleted.

Some pre 1993 examples:
320CE – a 3.2 litre E class coupe or cabriolet
230TE – a 2.3 litre E class estate
300E – a 3 litre E class saloon
420SL – a 4.2 litre SL
Some post 1993 examples:
E220 – a 2.2 litre E class saloon, estate, coupe or cabriolet
SL280 – a 2.8 litre SL

Coronavirus Precautions etc.Updated 22 January 2021

In line with UK Government instructions we are currently closed to visitors until further notice. We are however contactable by phone and email during normal business hours.

We are still selling cars during lockdown, and as well as our legendary ultra-detailed website descriptions and multiple photos we are now working to provide a no-nonsense 'warts and all' walk-round video for each car. In recent months these videos have given many customers the confidence to purchase cars without actually seeing them 'in the metal'. We are happy to store your purchase free of charge until such time as it is permissible to collect it.

Due to various staffing and supply issues outside our control it is currently taking much longer to prepare cars, and as a result there are very few for sale on the website at present. Models currently awaiting preparation but available for inspection are: R107 300SL roadster, W111 280SE 3.5 coupe, W123 230CE coupe, W123 280TE estate, W124 E320 estate, W124 300TE estate, W124 230TE estate, W124 230CE coupe, W124 E220 cabriolet, W126 500SEL saloon and W201 190E 2.5-16 saloon. Any of them can be reserved pending preparation, and as soon as you have secured your chosen car by payment of a deposit it will be brought to the head of the queue for immediate attention.
