This is one of only 789 E220 cabriolets officially imported to the UK, and is even rarer than that statistic suggests by being one of the tiny number to be specified with the desirable Sportline option, comprising lowered and uprated springs, uprated dampers, roll bars and bushes, higher geared steering rack and special badging. It also has a high specification generally, with most options present. Combined with its low mileage, beautiful condition, and being in a gorgeous colour combination, this makes it a very desirable car indeed.
It was supplied new to a lady in Surrey by Puttocks Mercedes-Benz of Guildford in January 1994. She kept it for 13 years until November 2007, when it went to a gentleman near St Albans who bought it for his wife. She was rather nervous of using such a beautiful vehicle and made most of her journeys in the family 4×4, so a year later we purchased it and supplied it to a retired gentleman near Hereford. He treasured it and kept it in pristine condition during his 12 years of stewardship. He died in 2020, and we purchased it back from his widow and supplied it to a director of a company which designs and builds medical laboratories. His workload has been stratospheric since he purchased it, and he has only had time to add around 2,000 miles to its total figure in the two years he has owned it. For the majority of his ownership period we have stored it for him, and he has finally realised that he will probably not use it in the foreseeable future, so it is once again available to a new owner. This will be the third time we have sold it in 14 years!
Despite the low mileage covered, all the owners have verged on the obsessive when it comes to maintenance, There are no less than 15 service stamps in the book from the original supplying dealer up to 2008, then a further nine from a well respected independent Mercedes specialist in Hereford. We will service it again before it goes to its new owner. Servicing has been done on a time elapsed rather than mileage covered basis, and most have been done at extremely low mileage intervals. In no case has the service interval been more than 6,000 miles, against the manufacturer’s recommendation of 9,000. The history file contains all but the first five service invoices, and every MoT certificate since the car was three years old.
The physical condition is superb throughout, with all fixtures and fittings in full working order. It drives beautifully and feels like a much younger car.>
We have carried out a comprehensive mechanical check of the car in our own workshop. Any faults found have been remedied, and any required maintenance has been carried out. A schedule of this work will be supplied with the car, along with our own warranty, details of which can be supplied on request.
