This car is representative of a model that was once quite numerous on UK roads, but which is now, at 28 years old, very rarely found in collectable condition thanks to the hard life that most of them endured in later years. It is a pre-facelift model, unchanged in appearance since the 3 litre version was introduced in 1986, with the more prominent grille than the later cars and no plastic ‘Sacco boards’ along the lower side panels, making it one of the last Mercedes to have the upright, foursquare, traditional Mercedes look.
It is in beautiful condition throughout, having been pampered for its entire life by only two owners, the latest of which acquired it 20 years ago in 1996 and has spared no expense in keeping everything just right.
The very pale gold/bronze paintwork, together with the cream interior add to the classic style and look absolutely right for the period. In that era Mercedes cars were still very much the conservative choice for successful practitioners in the various professions who wanted it to be known that they had ‘arrived’, but wanted something a little different from the models offered by the prestige domestic manufacturers.
It was supplied new by the well-known Road Range Mercedes-Benz dealership of Liverpool in October 1988 to a female director of a property company on The Wirral. She kept it for eight years until 1996, after which it was sold, again via Road Range, to a partner in a Liverpool Solicitors Practice. He has owned it until now, and having spoken extensively to him it is clear that he viewed it as a classic right from when he first purchased it 20 years ago. As such he has used it very sparingly as a third car in the household, and spared no expense on preventative maintenance.
The service book contains eight stamps from the supplying dealer until they closed in 1997, seven from a trusted local garage and a further seven from an independent Mercedes-Benz specialist in nearby Formby. As well as the stamped up service book we have many old service invoices and all MOT records back to 1995.
The pre-facelift W124 saloons, particularly the six cylinder versions, are becoming very sought after now, as the supply of well kept low mileage examples is virtually exhausted. This one will become a treasured possession for its new owner and will be widely admired wherever it goes.
We have carried out a comprehensive mechanical check of the car. Any faults found have been remedied, and any required maintenance has been carried out. A schedule of this work will be supplied with the car, along with our own warranty, details of which can be supplied on request.
