Cheshire Classic Benz

Supplying the highest quality examples of classic Mercedes-Benz cars from the 1960s to 1990s

280SL Roadster 2.8 Litre 6 Cyl LHD 1975P – SOLD

Topaz Brown, brown soft top, Mushroom MB Tex interior, rare manual gearbox, manual windows, rear seats, original Becker Monza radio/cassette player, original 14” alloy wheels, all tools and manuals, FSH, only two owners from the same family, 71,000 miles.

This totally original early R107 SL in the incredibly rare (we have never seen another) colour of Topaz Brown with Mushroom MB Tex interior looks almost as good now as when it emerged from the Mercedes factory in 1975. It is in fabulous condition throughout, and looks delightfully ‘retro’ in its period colour scheme. It is a true timewarp vehicle and it drives superbly. Being a left hand drive car and built ‘as designed’ it does drive that little bit better than any right hand drive example, as do all left hand drive Mercedes.

It is difficult to believe that it is now over 45 years old, and at that age it does of course gain an exemption from UK road tax and MOT testing, though we will put a new MOT on it before handover to its new owner.

Built only four years after the model’s inception, and being an example produced for the home market, it has all the delightful original details from when the model was released, prior to any facelifts. Examples are the small chrome door mirror, two tone tufted carpets, moulded rubber boot mat, traditional style steering wheel, older style column stalk, foot operated parking brake and windscreen washers and wind-up windows. For all these reasons, as well as the condition and the rare colour scheme, we think it will appeal strongly to the serious collector of Mercedes-Benz cars, and will be discussed favourably wherever knowledgeable enthusiasts gather.

The car has been in the same family since new. It was purchased and collected directly from the Mercedes factory in Stuttgart by a hotelier based in the Black Forest town of Freudenstadt, Baden Württemberg, Germany, and is still original and unrestored. It had limited use as he had a workaday vehicle for the hotel and a modern Mercedes for personal use, so it was mainly used for touring in the region with occasional trips to France. It was always maintained by the same Mercedes dealership in Freudenstadt, only ever used in the summer months and always garaged.

On his passing away in 2010 his daughter and her British partner inherited the car and imported it to the UK where it has since been mainly garaged at their home near Manchester, with occasional sunny day trips to the Peak District. With a growing family however they have limited use for the car, and have reluctantly relinquished it on the understanding that it goes to a caring owner who will carry on the level of care and affection that has been lavished on it all its life.

When it came to the UK the kilometer marked speedometer was changed for one showing miles (with a written certification of the change and the correct mileage as above from a reputable Mercedes specialist) and the lighting converted to UK specification. All the removed parts (speedometer, headlamp glasses, rear light unit with LH foglamp) will stay with the car and can be refitted if it goes back to a country with right hand traffic.

There are eight stamps in the service book from the MB dealer in Freudenstadt. Since coming to the UK it has been serviced twice by the MB specialist who did the changes for UK driving, and we will service it prior to handing over to its new owner. In addition to the stamped up service book and registration documents we have the German ‘Oldtimer’ documentation and all MOT certificates since it came to the UK.

Values of this model have been climbing steadily over recent years, partly as a knock-on effect of the meteoric rise in prices of the earlier Pagoda model, and they show no sign of abating. This is unquestionably one of the very best examples remaining, with the added attraction of having an unusual ‘period’ colour scheme and many early features. As such it can be thought of as a sound investment which is also a lovely thing to own and use.

We have carried out a comprehensive mechanical check of the car in our own workshop. Any faults found have been remedied, and any required maintenance has been carried out. A schedule of this work will be supplied with the car, along with our own warranty, details of which can be supplied on request.
