This is one of the most desired Mercedes models of the 1960s and 70s, beloved of film stars and the very wealthy when new, and a lasting style icon which shows most modern cars up to be passing fads and slaves to ever changing fashion. The flowing lines of its Paul Bracq designed coachwork are seemingly even more beautiful now than when it was new, made all the more so in most people’s eyes by the low radiator grille which was part of the late facelift of the model. It is presented in a colour scheme which shows it off to perfection. Few models from any maker, old or new, have anything like its presence.
This example was ordered new by a professor at The University of California, Los Angeles and has had two further US owners in Hollywood and Van Nuys. In 2008 it was imported to Ireland and went to an owner in Dublin, from whom we recently purchased it.
The car was completely original structurally and in superb condition when we acquired it, with no welding ever having been needed, having lived its entire life in the warm California sun. The non-original ivory paintwork and the interior woodwork was, however showing some cosmetic deterioration. We have had the body stripped and repainted in its original Sand Beige metallic, which is a gorgeous and distinctive colour that suits the car perfectly, and the wood refurbished. The leather interior has not been touched apart from sensitive cleaning as it is still in glorious original condition with just a light patina as befits the car’s age.
We have had all mechanical components checked, serviced and adjusted as necessary, and it drives superbly. We have undertaken several trips as part of the proving, including two ninety mile motorway journeys. In every case it has performed faultlessly in both high speed running and heavy traffic.
The car has obviously been very well maintained over the years, and with the recent expenditure detailed above it drives and handles superbly, with very few concessions being necessary due to its age. The gorgeous straight-six engine provides smooth reliable performance via the four speed auto gearbox, and has absolutely no trouble keeping pace with modern traffic. It makes a perfect entrant to classic car tours and shows, or even a daily driver for those who like to make a statement with their mode of transport. Being pre-1973 it does of course qualify for free historic road tax, and since the recent inclusion of pre-1973 cars it is now old enough to get into the paddock car park at the Goodwood Revival.
We have commissioned a comprehensive mechanical check of the car by our independent Mercedes-Benz specialist. Any significant faults found have been remedied, and any required maintenance has been carried out. Invoices for this work will be supplied with the car, along with our own warranty, details of which can be supplied on request.
