This is one of the most desired Mercedes models of the 1960s, beloved of film stars and the very wealthy when new, and a lasting style icon which shows most modern cars up to be passing fads and slaves to ever changing fashion. The flowing lines of its Paul Bracq designed coachwork are seemingly even more beautiful now than when it was new, and it is presented in a colour scheme which shows it off to perfection. Few models from any maker, old or new, have anything like its presence.

The W111 coupe is our favourite classic Mercedes bar none. We like to buy them whenever we can find good ones, which is not that often as most have been used and abused in their 50+ years of life, and conceal a litany of horrors beneath their svelte surfaces. This particular example has been our own car since 2014, and we have used it quite extensively, including for some film and TV work. When we purchased it the mechanical and structural condition were excellent, but it was somewhat scruffy and had been repainted in a metallic cherry red with a white roof, which we felt did not suit it at all.

We have carried out a bare metal repaint in the original very pale blue with dark blue roof, which is very much “in period” for the model and looks absolutely stunning. We have also had the wood refinished, fitted new carpets and have had new leather seat covers fitted in the correct pattern. We have also replaced various rubber seals etc. and corrected a few other minor faults.

It runs beautifully and is a pleasure to travel in on any sort of journey. As a model it drives and handles superbly, with very few concessions being necessary due to its age. The gorgeous straight-six engine provides smooth, reliable performance via the four speed auto gearbox, and has absolutely no trouble keeping pace with modern traffic, and the power steering, servo brakes and supple coil spring suspension are well up to anything demanded of them. It makes a perfect entrant to classic car tours and shows, or even a Summer daily driver for those who like to make a statement with their mode of transport. Being over 40 years old it does of course qualify for free historic road tax, and is old enough to get into the classic car park at the Goodwood Revival.

This is the actual car featured in Quentin Willson’s “Smart Buys of the Year” in the May 2017 issue of Classic Cars magazine, where he annually rounds up the five models that he tips for increasing in value in the coming years. Among other things he said “The elegant Paul Bracq lines look better every day, radiating a Beverly Hills glamour that outshines even Pagoda SLs. On looks alone the W111 coupes will carry on rising and become gold-plated classic icons. Don’t get hung up on engine size because what you’re buying here is beauty. For that reason alone its financial future is assured.” Pete drove the car the 450 mile round trip to Surrey for the photo shoot, during which it predictably did not miss a beat. A copy of the magazine is in the file and goes with the car.

We have carried out a comprehensive mechanical check in our own workshop. Any faults found have been remedied, and any required maintenance has been carried out. A schedule of this work will be supplied with the car, along with our own warranty, details of which can be supplied on request.
