This model was the epitome of Mercedes’ car-building art when it emerged from Stuttgart in 1997, only one year before the model was discontinued, and would have been the transport of choice for pop stars, captains of industry and high ranking politicians. In real terms it has seldom been surpassed since then in terms of performance, comfort and driveability. What it definitely has that no model from this or any other manufacturer has since contained is the legendary Mercedes build quality that was sadly lacking in later models.
The number of well cared for, low mileage W140 saloons remaining in circulation is getting very low, and the ones that do still exist are now being appreciated by the enthusiast fraternity in quite a different way to when they were new, as their deeper qualities are being recognised. Even though they are extremely durable and withstand high mileages like few other cars, they do however respond to sympathetic use and comprehensive maintenance, and there is nothing like the quality of a cherished low mileage example such as this.
It looks beautiful in its metallic silver paintwork with contrasting light and dark grey leather interior, and it is in superb condition throughout, completely belying its 20 years of age.
For the first year or so of its life it was a management car for Mercedes-Benz at Milton Keynes. It then went to another owner in the London area before being purchased by a lady in NW London in 2002, by which time it had covered around 12,000 miles. She kept it for six years until 2008 when it went to a motor dealer in Lincolnshire who owned it until 2015, though for the last three years of his tenure it was kept in storage. We supplied it to its latest owner, a retired gentleman and regular customer of ours in Sevenoaks, Kent, who has enjoyed 14,000 miles of serene luxury over the last two years, but who now has a hankering for something different.
After a PDI inspection by the Mercedes-Benz Company Car Workshop at Milton Keynes, servicing has mainly been carried out by Mercedes-Benz of Colindale, NW London, with four of their stamps in the book. With the penultimate owner the servicing was entrusted to a specialist service centre in Peterborough, whose owner is a Mercedes trained mechanic, and a trusted local garage in Stamford, though not all servicing was stamped in the book. We spoke to the garages by telephone and managed to fill the gaps from their records and this has been recorded. The latest owner has had it serviced twice by an independent Mercedes specialist in Sevenoaks, the most recent being under 1,000 miles ago.
This imposing car will suit the discerning enthusiast perfectly, and as well as being a wonderful mode of transport will be a talking point wherever it goes. It will be a delight to own and drive for many years to come.
We have carried out a comprehensive mechanical check of the car in our own workshop. Any faults found have been remedied, and any required maintenance has been carried out. A schedule of this work will be supplied with the car, along with our own warranty, details of which can be supplied on request.
