Signal Red, matching hardtop, black soft top, black sport check interior, 4-speed auto, ABS, limited slip differential, cruise control, electric windows, rear seats, fire extinguisher, original Panasonic radio/cassette player, original 15” alloy wheels, central locking, all tools and manuals, FSH, 74,000 miles.
This lovely vehicle was the top of the range of the SL roadsters available to UK buyers from 1986 to 1989, and would have carried a hefty price premium over the less powerful 300 and 420 alternatives when new.
It was delivered new by Mercedes-Benz of Edgware Road, London, and appears to have been a Mercedes-Benz management car for the first year of its life. It then went to an owner in the Northampton area for the next four years, taking it up to 54,000 miles. In 1991/92 it came to Cheshire, where we understand it was owned by the same family, but with several registered keepers, until 2013. It saw very sparing use during this period, with only around 20,000 miles covered in eleven years. In 2013 it went to a retired gentleman in Swansea who has owned it until now. He is working through his ‘bucket list’ of cars he has always wanted to own, so it has now given way to an AC Cobra.
It has been serviced regularly for the whole of its life. Its first year with Mercedes-Benz UK saw it being serviced twice by the MBUK workshop at Milton Keynes. Next there are eight stamps from Arlington Mercedes of Northampton, followed by a further seven from Mercedes franchised dealers in Cheshire. We have had it serviced in our own workshop, so it is now ready for a further 6,000 miles before any scheduled attention is needed. In addition to the stamped up service book we have all MOT records back to 2006.
It is in gorgeous condition throughout and drives beautifully, with the subtle rumble under acceleration and seamless wave of torque that typifies the Mercedes V8 engines of this era. The bright red colour scheme with black soft top and interior is a favourite for many purchasers and the car will always be admired in any company.
Values of this model have been climbing steadily over recent years as a knock-on effect of the meteoric rise in prices of the earlier Pagoda model, and they show no sign of abating. Superb examples such as this one can therefore be thought of as a blue-chip investment which is also a lovely thing to own and use.
We have carried out a comprehensive mechanical check of the car in our own workshop. Any faults found have been remedied, and any required maintenance has been carried out (see above). A schedule of this work will be supplied with the car, along with our own warranty, details of which can be supplied on request.
