This model was the epitome of Mercedes’ car-building art when it first emerged from Stuttgart in 1991, and was the favoured transport of royalty, pop stars, captains of industry and high ranking politicians. Its Bruno Sacco styled shape was thought by many to be quite brutal when it was first released, but in the present day when viewed alongside many current model executive cars it looks very elegant.
In real terms it has seldom been surpassed since then in terms of comfort and driveability. It is also no slouch when it comes to performance, and gives useful fuel economy on long runs for such a large car. What it most definitely has that no model from Mercedes-Benz or any other manufacturer has since contained is the legendary build quality that has been sadly lacking in later models.
The number of well cared for, low mileage W140 saloons remaining in circulation is getting very low, and the ones that do still exist are now being appreciated by the enthusiast fraternity in quite a different way to when they were new, as their deeper qualities are being recognised. Even though they are extremely durable and withstand high mileages like few other cars, they do however respond to sympathetic use and comprehensive maintenance, and there is nothing to compare with the quality of a cherished low mileage example such as this.
It looks beautiful in its traditional silver paintwork with contrasting pale grey leather interior, and this colour combination is able to satisfy the tastes of most buyers. All parts of it are in superb condition, completely belying its 20 years of age.
It was registered new by Mercedes-Benz of Macclesfield as a demonstrator on 26 November 1998 and sold the very next day to a gentleman in Poynton, Cheshire, who kept it for ten years until 2008 and covered around 58,000 miles in it. It then went to a lady on the island of Anglesey for a year before coming back to Cheshire to a gentleman in High Lane, only three or four miles from its original owner. He kept it for five years until 2014 and took the mileage up to 69,000. At this point we supplied it to a repeat customer of ours, an elderly hotelier from Chester, who owned it until early 2017. He had to give up driving for health reasons, so we purchased it back from him and supplied it to a new owner near Warrington. Unfortunately a recurring back injury from his motor racing days meant he could not drive it comfortably, so this lovely car is now available once more.
Servicing has been diligently attended to by all owners, with 12 stamps in the book. Four are from MB dealers, three from independent MB specialists (including ourselves) and five from trusted local garages. Most of the servicing has been done annually at very small mileage intervals.
This imposing car will suit the discerning enthusiast perfectly, and as well as being a superb mode of transport will be a talking point wherever it goes. It will be a delight to own and drive for many years to come.
We have carried out a comprehensive mechanical check of the car in our own workshop. Any faults found have been remedied, and any required maintenance has been carried out. Invoices for this work will be supplied with the car, along with our own warranty, details of which can be supplied on request.
