£SOLD

This beautiful saloon, in its delightful period colour scheme, was supplied new by Prestwich Motors Mercedes-Benz of Portslade, Sussex (later to become Rivervale Mercedes) in May 1980 as a company car to a city insurance broker based in Hove. He never used it for work as the train up to London was far more convenient. In 1985 he died and the car passed to his widow, with whom it has been ever since.

Despite averaging less than 1,000 miles per annum in a gradually reducing annual pattern, it has always been taxed and MOT’d, ready to go, and has done at least a small mileage every year right up to date. Amazingly it has been serviced almost every year of its life and we are told has only ever had genuine Mercedes parts used. In the service book there are 24 service stamps from the supplying dealer. In 2000 the lady moved to Pinner, North London to be near her daughter, so the servicing changed to an independent Mercedes specialist in the area (three stamps) then a trusted local garage (four stamps), and finally another local garage (four stamps) where we are told it was always attended to by an ex-Mercedes mechanic.

It has never been driven in bad weather, has always had a heated double garage all to itself, and thanks to the owner’s fanatical attention to its upkeep every part of it is in absolutely top condition. Were it not for its classic lines it could easily be mistaken for a one or two year old car.

We thoroughly enjoyed driving it the 190 miles from Pinner to Cheshire, where it operated faultlessly, with all controls feeling tight and new, and we have since driven it 200 miles to North Yorkshire and back (see below). It has ample power and feels completely relaxed cruising at motorway speeds in modern traffic conditions.

This is an incredibly rare opportunity to acquire a hardly used W123 saloon in pristine condition, now that most of the remaining ones are tired and worn. Regardless of whether the new owner keeps it as a low mileage gem or uses it sparingly as an everyday car it will deliver many years of pleasurable returns, far in excess of its modest purchase price.

We have carried out a comprehensive mechanical check of the car in our own workshop. Any faults found have been remedied, and any required maintenance has been carried out. A schedule of this work will be supplied with the car, along with our own warranty, details of which can be supplied on request. Since the photographs were taken the time-expired tyres (two of them original equipment still with ample tread) have been replaced with new Continentals.

This car won the Richard Sturman trophy for Best Car in Show, out of approximately 40 W123 saloons, coupes and estates entered by keen owners, at the 2015 Mercedes-Benz Club annual W123 day. The judges commented particularly on the complete originality and freshness of the car’s presentation. The trophy has now gone back to the club to be engraved and replaced in the trophy cabinet, but there is an engraved silver plate which will go with the car to its new owner.
