We took this car in part exchange a few months ago and have been using it as daily transport ourselves until now, having covered several thousand miles travelling all over the country with superb comfort and 100% reliability, sometimes packed to the roof with spare parts. We have to say that the W124 diesels are not really our favourite form of transport, but we know they have a huge following among the Mercedes cognoscenti and the superb fuel economy and huge load capacity of this one has quite won us over.
It was supplied new by Gerard Mann Mercedes-Benz of Birmingham in August 1993 to a director of a video equipment company in Worcestershire. He kept it for four years and covered 40,000 miles during that time. The second and latest owner, a solicitor from The Wirral, Merseyside, purchased it in April 1997 from Road Range Mercedes-Benz of Liverpool as a Mercedes approved used car, and we have the used car sales invoice in the sum of £22,140. He has used it mainly as business transport for visiting clients all over the UK.
The PDI and first service were carried out by the supplying dealer, and after that the first owner had it serviced by a local non-franchised garage for its entire period with him, with six of their stamps in the book. The second owner had four services carried out by Road Range, then reverted to a local Unipart service centre for the rest of his ownership, with occasional visits to the main dealer for specialist items. All servicing has been carried out at the recommended intervals and the service book is fully stamped until it ran out of pages. Every service invoice from 1997 to the present has been kept, and it can be seen that no expense has been spared in keeping the car in top condition. Every MoT certificate for the same period has also been retained, and the current one stretches into 2011.
Condition is truly excellent for a car of this mileage, with hardly a mark to the interior and on the exterior just a few stone chips and several small rust bubbles in the usual places ahead of the front wheelarches. Paintwork is excellent and the bodywork is very straight and level. As would be expected there is some wear and tear. The steering wheel is rather shiny, there are a few scuffs to the wheeltrims and the engine bay is not the cleanest we have ever seen, but everything is in working order and the driving experience is superb. This is hardly surprising given the superb service history.
Mercedes estate cars of this era have enormous load capacity coupled with unrivalled comfort and driving pleasure. Most however, once past the first few years of their lives, settled into a pattern of heavy and wearing use as a family holdall or load hauler, with minimal maintenance and unsympathetic treatment. This car has escaped that fate and been sympathetically used and meticulously maintained throughout its life.
We have commissioned a comprehensive mechanical check of the car by our independent Mercedes specialist. Any faults found have been remedied, and any required maintenance has been carried out. Invoices for this work will be supplied with the car, along with our own limited warranty, details of which can be supplied on request.
