This car was the ultimate statement of Mercedes-Benz craftsmanship and technology when it was supplied new in 1987, and is fitted with virtually every comfort and safety option then available. It was hugely advanced for its time, and it still outclasses many modern cars in terms of comfort, refinement, performance and sheer presence on the road.
The subtly understated colour and trim combination was quite rare in 1988, but is one that is very much favoured by new car buyers today. It looks fantastic, giving the striking shape an even more dynamic and purposeful appearance. Paintwork and trim is pristine, and the car is mechanically superb. It looks and feels very much younger than it is.
It was supplied new by Geyfords Mercedes-Benz of Tooting, London to the managing director of a major regional radio management company (responsible amongst many others for Radio Caroline and Capital Radio), who had it as a company car for almost three years. In 1990 he sold his share in the company and took the car with him, paying the company £36,500 for it, for which we have the original invoice. He kept it for a further 14 years until 2004, by which time the mileage was around 49,000. It was then purchased by a classic Mercedes specialist in Sussex who supplied it to a local gentleman. This second owner used the car as his daily transport and covered a further 29,000 miles in his two years of ownership. In November 2006 it was acquired by its latest owner, a gentleman in Aberdeen who has only added a further 19,000 miles in his three and a half years of ownership, mainly because he generally works abroad on long contracts. He has now sold it because he was not doing justice to the car and also due to lack of storage space.
Servicing was initially carried out by the supplying dealer with three of their stamps in the book, followed by three from Mercedes-Benz Great West Road, Brentford, and three from Hughes of Beaconsfield Mercedes-Benz. In the time with its second owner there is one stamp from Rawsons Mercedes-Benz of Tonbridge and five from a well known independent Mercedes specialist in Kent.
The latest owner has had it serviced exclusively by the well known Merparts independent Mercedes specialist near Glasgow, with two of their stamps present, and he has pursued a crusade for perfection with invoices totalling over £12,000 for repairs and replacements during his three and a half year period of ownership. Significant items from these invoices include timing chain and tensioner, aircon condenser, full waxoyling, shock absorbers, oil cooler, suspension bushes, wheel bearings, brake discs, ignition system, exhaust, window seals, chrome parts and wheel refurbishment. The condition of the car fully reflects his "no expense spared" approach to its upkeep.
We have every service and maintenance invoice back to 2004, and a good number of the ones prior to that, as far back as 1990. We also have most of the old MoT certificates back to 2003.
From behind the wheel the impression is of smooth silent perfection, with ample space and every comfort for four passengers over any distance. Cruising is absolutely effortless and acceleration breathtaking, with just a distant V8 growl when progress becomes more urgent. By contrast, slow speed handling is very precise, and thanks to the very tight turning circle and light throttle the car feels much smaller than it really is when manoevering. We have driven it nearly 400 miles from its previous home, and can vouch for its addictive qualities and superb driving experience. A significant part of the journey was spent discussing whether we could justify adding it to our own collection, but sadly we can't as we already have too many cars. This is a very special car which attracts admiring attention wherever it goes, and it represents a rare opportunity to own something of immense quality which will reward with lasting pleasure.
This actual car was the subject of a five page article in Mercedes Enthusiast magazine, July 2006 issue, where it was highlighted as one of the best examples of its type. A copy of the magazine is included in the file.
We have commissioned a comprehensive mechanical check of the car by our independent Mercedes specialist. Any faults found have been remedied, and any required maintenance has been carried out. Invoices for this work will be supplied with the car, along with our own warranty, details of which can be supplied on request.
