We are always surprised and delighted to find W123 cars in excellent condition, especially estate models, as so few still exist, but this one was no surprise as we have known the owner for many years via the Mercedes-Benz Club. Each time we have seen him we have tried to prise this car from his grasp but to no avail, until now. Until recently it has been part of a small collection of classic cars, all of them in concours condition, but a house move is imminent and there is no longer room to store them all, so this one had to go.
It was supplied new by Mercedes-Benz of Edgware Road, London in January 1986 to a gentleman in Hale, Cheshire, and is one of the last of this model to be built. He used the car very sparingly and maintained it fastidiously until his death in 2003, by which time it had covered approximately 24,000 miles. Ownership briefly passed to his widow and she asked a well known Manchester prestige car dealer to sell it for her. He was so impressed with its quality that he bought it himself. It was acquired in 2006 by the latest owner who is a long term staff member at the same dealership. The last two owners between them have only added around 7,000 miles to the tally in the seven years they have owned the car, and both have kept it in showroom condition. Since acquisition by its latest owner it has won numerous concours prizes at Mercedes-Benz Club events and a couple of years ago he took it on its longest ever journey which was a tour around Europe, with complete reliability.
The service book is stamped up to 2005, with two stamps from Drayton Mercedes of Stoke-on-Trent, two from a non-franchised garage in Altrincham and one from Bauer Millett. Subsequent to that we have a service invoice dated March 2007 from the same garage in Altrincham as used by the original owner and one dated March 2010, around 800 miles ago, from an independent Mercedes specialist in Poulton-le-Fylde. In addition to the above we also have every old MoT certificate.
The car looks superb in its jet black paint, which is absolutely unmarked. This is complemented perfectly by the pristine anthracite cloth interior, the surfaces of which still have that new car look and feel. It has been a privilege to drive it the short journeys for photography and inspection purposes, and we can confirm that it operates faultlessly, with all controls feeling tight and new.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire a hardly-used W123 estate for a sensible sum, now that most of the few remaining ones are well and truly past their best. Regardless of whether the new owner keeps it as a low mileage gem or uses it sparingly as an everyday car it will deliver many years of pleasurable returns, far in excess of its modest purchase price. We hope to see it regularly scooping up silverware in concours competitions for years to come.
We have commissioned a comprehensive mechanical check of the car by our independent Mercedes specialist. Any faults found have been remedied, and any required maintenance has been carried out. Invoices for this work will be supplied with the car, along with our own warranty, details of which can be supplied on request.
