This is
the entry level to the R129 SL range, but is none the worse for that, as by
this time in the model's life all the desirable features which had been extra
cost options were incorporated into the standard specification. It also has the
bonus of having the most fuel-efficient engine to be offered in this body style,
which is a slightly smaller capacity version of the highly popular 3.2 litre
straight six. The classic silver body colour with black leather suits this
model perfectly. All aspects of the car including mechanics, paintwork, trim,
soft top, wheels and tyres are in top condition. The car is unbadged, but
should the new owner wish it to be identifiable as a 280 the correct boot lid badge
can be fitted.
The car
was supplied new by Monarch Mercedes-Benz of Tamworth in May 1997 to an owner
in London. They
kept it until around 2003, after which it had two owners in the Reading area. In December
2007 it moved to a consultant physician based in Nottingham,
who has owned it until now.
After the
PDI stamp from the supplying dealer there is one stamp from Normand
Mercedes-Benz of Mayfair and three from Greenoaks
MB of Reading.
There follows one stamp from a non-franchised garage in Pangbourne, then two
from an independent Mercedes specialist in Nottingham.
This was only around 3,000 miles ago, but since it was over a year ago we have
had it serviced again by our independent Mercedes specialist. The average
actual service interval for the car's entire life has been around 7,000 miles,
as against the manufacturer's recommended 9,000.
It is a lovely
relaxing car to drive, with all controls taut and responsive as befits the careful
maintenance and sympathetic use it has had. The 2.8 litre straight six engine
is no slouch however, and when called upon can display an excellent turn of
speed, with the ultra-surefooted handling and comfortable ride that this
chassis is well known for.
We have
commissioned a comprehensive mechanical check of the car by our independent Mercedes-Benz
specialist. Any faults found have been remedied, and any required maintenance
has been carried out (see above). Invoices for this work will be supplied with
the car, along with our own warranty, details of which can be supplied on
request.
