This rare and delightful vehicle is an unexpected find which offers an almost unique insight into what it was like to experience a new Mercedes SL twenty years ago. Not only that, but it is also finished in one of the most popular colour and trim combinations of Signal Red with black leather, which suits it perfectly and shows off the ample chrome superbly.
The car was originally supplied by Road Range Mercedes-Benz of Liverpool in August 1988 to the director of a property company in Aintree. He kept it until 2001, but changed the ownership from the company to himself personally in 1997. In total he covered around 14,000 miles in the car during his thirteen years of ownership.
From 2001 until now it has been owned by a London based senior partner of a major international law firm, who kept it at his weekend apartment in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire. It was intended as a special car for outings locally, but due to pressure of work and other personal commitments in London he rarely got a chance to use it. As a result it spent virtually all its time in the underground car park of his apartment block under a fleece lined fitted dust cover, occasionally being started and moved by the concierge on the owner's instruction.
PDI and early servicing was carried out by the supplying dealer, with three of their stamps in the book. There is then one stamp from HL Gorner Mercedes-Benz of Wigan and three from Speeds Mercedes-Benz of Blackpool (later MB Blackpool). We have brought the servicing upto date with a service from Mercedes-Benz of Macclesfield, so it is now ready for a further 6,000 miles before any scheduled attention is due. In its 21 year life it has covered an average of just over 800 miles per annum, and the average service interval has been under 2,500 miles against the manufacturer's recommended 6,000. In addition to the fully stamped service book we also have most of the old MoT records back to 2000, invoices for three of the services by Speeds/MB Blackpool and several other maintenance invoices from Speeds/MB Blackpool.
The condition of the car is commensurate with the mileage, i.e. virtually as new. The paintwork appears like that of a one year old car and the interior trim and soft top look as if they have never been used. All fittings and equipment are in full working order and it drives like a dream, in no small part thanks to the fastidious maintenence regime which has been followed.
Ultra-low mileage R107 SLs in original condition from the post 1986 final model update are very rare now. Those that do exist tend to be in private collections and do not come to market very often, and consequently values have been rising for some time. This is a rare opportunity to purchase one of the best examples remaining. It will be equally suitable for an enthusiast's collection or as an occasional use car for high days and holidays. If it covers a mileage of only a few thousand per annum with its new owner it will always be a rare and sought after possession, which is not only a beautiful thing to own but is also likely to be a sound investment compared to the other options currently available in the broader market.
We have commissioned a comprehensive mechanical check of the car by Mercedes-Benz Macclesfield. Any faults found have been remedied, and any required maintenance has been carried out (see above). Invoices for this work will be supplied with the car, along with our own warranty, details of which can be supplied on request.
