This is only the second W114/115 model we have ever offered for sale. We have been offered several over the years but almost without exception they have suffered from cosmetic and structural corrosion as would not be unexpected with a 36 year old car. This example is totally different and is worlds apart from the run of the mill offerings. It has been sparingly used, maintained without regard to expense and kept in perfect storage conditions all its life. This shows in the freshness of every detail, the near perfection of all its surfaces and components and the tight, new feel of the controls when driving it.
It was purchased new in September 1974 by an army Brigadier based in West Dulwich from SG Smith Mercedes-Benz of Crystal Palace, London, and he kept it for 11 years until 1985, covering 35,000 miles during this time. By then it was already a classic and it went to an ex-marketing director of HMV, presumably as a weekend indulgence. He owned it for 12 years, during which time he covered only around 17,000 miles, bringing the total to 52,000. In 1997 the car moved to a gentleman in Middlewich, Cheshire, who owned it for ten years but hardly used it. The latest owner was a gentleman near Warrington, Cheshire, who has owned it for three years but only used it for attending local car shows. Between them the last two owners have covered less than 6,000 miles in the last 13 years.
The service history is extremely good, with 11 stamps from the supplying dealer, five from other Mercedes dealers and two from non-franchised garages. All servicing has been done at close to the recommended mileage intervals, and it is clear from the way the car drives and handles that it has wanted for nothing at any time during its life. We have had it serviced by our independent Mercedes specialist, so it is now ready for another 6,000 miles before any scheduled maintenance is due. In addition to the stamped up service book we also have many old MoT certificates dating as far back as 1984 and many service and parts invoices dating back as far as 1985. The original owner has also compiled a detailed log of all expenditure made during his period of ownership.
Significant sums have been spent over the years keeping this car in top condition, and it shows in every detail. It looks magnificent in the luscious rich cream colour, and could easily pass for a two or three year old vehicle. The paintwork is pristine, the interior unmarked, all chrome and aluminium brightwork glistening, rubber seals etc. unperished and all fittings and equipment are present and working. Needless to say it drives beautifully. This is a rare and desirable car which was hugely exclusive in it's day and is even more so today but for different reasons. It will be admired wherever it goes with its new owner, and will be a refreshing change from the endless rows of SLs at club events.
We have commissioned a comprehensive mechanical check of the car by our independent Mercedes-Benz specialist. Any faults found have been remedied, and any required maintenance has been carried out (see above). Invoices for this work will be supplied with the car, along with our own warranty, details of which can be supplied on request.
