This model was the ultimate statement of Mercedes-Benz craftsmanship and technology when it was introduced in 1985 as an upgrade to the original 500SEC of 1980, and this is one of the very last ones made, from the last year of production. It is the absolute top of the range and is fitted with virtually every comfort and safety option then available. It was hugely advanced for its time, and even in its last year of production it still outclassed almost everything else on the road in terms of comfort, refinement, performance and sheer presence. It is still a delight to drive and gives a superb account of itself in any modern traffic conditions.

This car’s colour and trim combination of mid-blue metallic with cream leather is one of the most popular and looks gorgeous, giving the car a very elegant appearance which belies its prodigious power output. Paintwork and trim is pristine, and the car is mechanically superb. It looks and feels very much younger than it is.

It was supplied new by Bradshaw Webb Mercedes-Benz of Chelsea to the owner of a major jeweller and diamond merchant in Knightsbridge, and it was his company car for the first twelve years of its life. In 2005 he purchased it from the company and kept it as his personal property for a further two years, making his total ownership period 14 years, by which time the mileage was 40,000. It was then purchased by the London Mercedes specialist who had maintained it almost since new, and they supplied it to a local gentleman who kept it for four years. It then passed to a senior executive in the wines and spirits industry in Lewes, Sussex who has owned it until now.

Servicing was initially carried out by the supplying dealer, with two of their stamps in the book. Subsequently it went to the same London independent Mercedes specialist for the next 14 years, with an incredible 24 of their stamps in the book. The second owner had the car serviced twice by a non-franchised garage in London, for which we have both invoices, and the third owner had it serviced once by an independent Mercedes specialist in West Sussex, for which we have the invoice. We also have several other recent invoices detailing significant expenditure as evidence of conscientious attention to maintenance needs, and all old MoT certificates back to 2005. We have had the car serviced by our independent MB specialist, so it is now ready for a further 6,000 miles without scheduled maintenance. In all the car has been serviced 30 times since it was new, giving an average mileage between oil changes of under 2,000, as against the manufacturer’s recommendation of 6,000.

From behind the wheel the impression is of smooth silent perfection, with ample space and every comfort for four passengers over any distance. Cruising is absolutely effortless and acceleration breathtaking, with just a distant V8 growl when progress becomes more urgent. By contrast, slow speed handling is very precise, and thanks to the very tight turning circle and light throttle the car feels much smaller than it really is when maneuvering. We have driven it over 250 miles from its previous home, and can vouch for its addictive qualities and superb driving experience. A significant part of the journey was spent discussing whether we could justify adding it to our own collection, but sadly we can't as we already have too many cars. In this condition and with such a low mileage this is a very rare and special car, and one which will be a lasting pleasure for its new owner.

We have commissioned a comprehensive mechanical check of the car by our independent Mercedes specialist. Any faults found have been remedied, and any required maintenance has been carried out (see above). Invoices for this work will be supplied with the car, along with our own warranty, details of which can be supplied on request.
